How To Build The Perfect Smoothie (My 5 Step Checklist)

As someone who makes smoothies every single day, I’ve got to say I have my smoothie-making technique mastered. I know what needs to be added to make a smoothie that is not only delicious but also super healthy, nourishing, and great for the whole family. And today I’m sharing it with you. All you have to do to build the perfect smoothie is tick off each box below. It's that simple.

  1. Fruit – I normally add frozen bananas, blueberries, mango, pineapple, sometimes kiwi fruit, apple, and even whole oranges and lemons for a kick and some vitamin C.
  2. Veggies + Greens – Smoothies are truly the best way to sneak veggies and greens into your little one's diet. I love adding spinach, kale, zucchini, cauliflower, and even sometimes pees and you can’t even tell!
  3. Healthy Fats – The perfect way to balance out the fruit and keep everyone full for a while. I always add hemp seeds, chia seeds, ground flax, nut butter, avocado, coconut oil, pumpkin, seeds, sesame seeds, cashews, and even coconut flakes.
  4. Natural Sweetness – if you like a sweet smoothie or want to hide extra veggies then I tend to add 1-2 Medjool dates, date paste, or a splash of maple syrup.
  5. Liquid – I always try to mix it up or use a combo of water, coconut water, almond milk, soy milk, or oat milk. Delicious!
  6. Big handful of ice if you didn’t use any frozen fruit or veg.

And that’s it. If you follow these steps and tick off each box you’ll be left with a nourishing, nutrient-dense, delicious smoothie that’s great for the whole family. For my Creamy Green Smoothie recipe (featured above) check out My Plant-Based Family book (ebook + hard copy available).
